The Pinnacle

Pastel on sanded paper
Framed 20 x17

The Pinnacle is one of my favorite pieces in the series, Along Michigan Shores. The looseness of the rendering, the drama in the weathery clouds and the subject of the majestic GPYC tower are usually elements that work in my favor. Doing the piece was enjoyable and gratifying.

Night Lights

Pastel on sanded paper
Framed with Museum Glass protection ~ 19×15

Walking the docks on a dead calm evening, I felt I had found a secret treasure. The soft blue light that glows on and off at the tip of the yacht club tower, also resides in the dark murky waters below the building. In all my years of perusing the harbor, I had never seen the twin of the tower light, until that moment. Now, on totally calm nights, I regularly use the water as a magic mirror to view the scenes around me in a whole new “light”.

The Grand Old Lady of Belle Isle

The MacArthur Bridge has linked Detroit to Belle Isle for generations. The beautiful bridge is testimonial to design and style of the glory days of Detroit. How much fun it is to pass under the magnificent structure and honk a boat horn when deep within the concrete arches. What a reverberating announcement that, big or small, you are under there!

Long live the Grand Old Lady of Belle Isle.

Salt water taffy colors come to mind when I think of the Old Club. The houses perched on the boardwalk over the waters of the St. Clair River, exhibit a range of happy colors and tones. Rain or shine, seeing the lively lineup of houses always makes me smile.

The flying of the Yacht Club “colors” does not happen often. Consequently, when it does, it is special and a powerful sight. The event is a vision enjoyed by all club members, and honors the flags of the club’s current officers. To honor the majesty of that moment and to capture the beauty of our remarkable building, Flying the Colors was created.

Day on the River — Historic DYC

Pastel
Framed 13 x 17
SOLD – Private collection

A day spent on the Detroit River rarely goes by without taking a cruise toward the city center, passing landmarks on Belle Isle along the way. The Detroit Yacht Club building has stood proudly since 1922, and has been an official organization since 1868. No one can deny it — the scenery along Michigan shores is made more fascinatingly beautiful by the inclusion of the club house, the boats and docks surrounding the Historic DYC.

An Old Friend Off Belle Isle

Pastel on paper
Matted and Framed, 16 x 19
150.

This is going to take some time. Bear with me.

Another favorite piece in the Along Michigan Shores series depicts a quintessential river structure, the Detroit River water crib. I am fascinated with this stately old, stone structure. It is positioned in the river near the Belle Isle shore. The crib now provides access to the underground pipes and tunnels for the water system in Detroit Waterworks Park, on the Detroit shore.

Enough about its hardware… the building is amazing.

Am I the only one who finds it Romanesque and romantic, all sheathed in layers of big, old carved stones and patina copper roofing? On a sunset cruise not long ago, I saw the deep orange glow of the last sun rays reflected in its windows, making it appear alive. Like someone was home. As we passed the crib, a lone fisherman puttered his way toward it and gave me the notion that either he or the crib could serve as the prime subject in a painting, which I could title An Old Friend off Belle Isle. Both would be just right.

Bay View Pinnacle

Pastel — in the Bay View Gingerbread series
Framed 21 x 17
Sold, private collection

Nestled along the steep wooded banks of Lake Michigan’s Little Traverse Bay there is a unique community called Bay View. It was originally developed before the turn of the 20th century. The historic summer cottages of Bay View are magnificently preserved in their original state and are a unique reminder of life during a slower, more genteel time in America’s past.

The pastels in this series represent interesting pictorial details of some of those charming cottages. The workmanship of the wooden ‘gingerbread’ is elegant, impressive and a testament to the ability of artistic hands long since gone.
